does a better job of preserving their railway heritage than the British. To
celebrate the 200th anniversary of the running of the world's first steam
locomotive - Richard Trevithick's "Penydarren" locomotive, in addition,
it’s the 100th anniversary of City of Truro's 100 mph (162 km/h) run.
2004 is also being the 400 anniversary of the first recorded tramway in Britain,
the National Railway Museum will be presenting RAILFEST 2004. Over one hundred locomotives, RAILFEST 2004 will offer rides
(including behind City of Truro and the replica Rocket),
demonstrations - including the replica Penydarren engine, examples of the
latest rail vehicles, access to cabs and footplates (steam cabs), a vintage
fair, other vintage machinery, theater, music, film, model engineering and sales
of railway memorabilia.
RAILFEST 2004 will take place in York on a site specially prepared for the
event. Located along side UK’s National railway museum. The NRM is considered by
many to be the best rail transport museum in the world. It was the winner
of the "European Museum of the Year" award.
Live Steam Sized Railways will be represented at RAILFEST 2004.
Included will be the 2 ft gauge - FR Prince and the world's oldest bogie
carriage (Ffestiniog Railway), 2ft gauge - WW1 armoured Simplex locomotive (Ffestiniog
Railway), 15 inch gauge - Sutton Collection locomotives and train (Cleethorpes
Coast Light Railway), 5" & 7.25" gauge locomotives and display (York & District
Society of Model Engineers) |
In 1829 the Rocket won the Rainhill trials that established
Stephenson as the foremost builder of railway locomotives in England.
