Partially built Allen Models Consolidation kit. As you may or
may not know these Allen kits are bought either all at once or in sections.
The builder, here in Spokane, purchased sections One, Two & Three and machined
about 99% of the items. He is a professional machinist and he did a great
professional job. He machined and assembled the frame, drivers, journal boxes,
spring rigging for this locomotive. He quartered the drivers and installed the
main bearings. He almost completed the brake cylinder castings. He even had
the whole assembly powder coated so that it looks great.
He found out that he does not have time to complete this
engine or the space that it takes up in his shop. He asked me to sell it for
him. He has over $1,000 invested in the three sections that he bought, plus
about $500 in machining time and that is a low ball figure. Included in this
sale is all the parts from the sections that he bought plus a full set of
erection drawings and a set of other drawings.
Our asking price is $1,500 and we will accept cash, check or
PayPal payment. I have included in this listing, the part numbers of the parts
that were purchased along with their prices. Anyone who would be interested in
buying this locomotive can purchase all the following sections direct from
Allen Models, Inc. at 5994 Cuesta Verde, Goleta, CA 93117-1808. I personally
talked to Gene Allen via telcon on 5/5/08 and he told me that all required
sections are in stock. If you have any questions you may email me (link below)
and I will even send you my phone number. Arrangements can be made to see this
engine, now in my garage. It is expected that the buyer would pick up this kit
in Spokane, WA or make his own shipping arrangements.
The following is taken right from Allen
Models Inc. catalog:
This 2-8-0 Consolidtion is a free lance model of the early slide valve
type. The model reflects an updating in the early nineteen thirties. In this
period the inside valve gear was changed to outside for better efficiency and
ease of maintenance. Some times new stacks, domes and cabs were added. Piston
valve conversions were also made when updating, but we retained the slide
valve for ease of construction. I have always felt the slide valve was the
easiest for the beginning builder to handle. It has 5 3/8” (51” scale)
drivers. This puts it in the switcher and short haul class. Using many of the
Mogul castings and the boiler helps to keep the cost down. The rigid wheel
base is only one inch longer than the Mogul, thus keeping the same turning
radius of thirty two feet. In keeping with the updating, the tender trucks
have been changed to ball bearing instead of friction archbar type. As with
the rest of our line of engines, it is very easy for kit bashing. It could be
built as a small Mikado by some frame changes and adding a trailing truckI
think any builder will be pleased with the finished engine.
