Stolen Equipment Found Damaged

Editor's Note:

This theft highlights how vulnerable we are when we store or transport our equpmnet in trailers. Trailers are easily stolen even if you put a lock on the hitch.

A friend suggested to me that I post devices to prevent trailers from being moved.  I've seached and found several "Boot" products on line.  They are listed below.

Late last night I received a phone call from the Irondale, Alabama police department dispatcher who told me that someone dropped off our SOO power unit locomotive, the slug, and the caboose at the Irondale police department parking lot at the front door.

I would like to thank that person for watching the Birmingham TV news that carried pictures of the train and a description of the trailer that were stolen. After viewing the TV news that person noticed seeing the SOO in a trash dump at the Birmingham airport.

Marti and I drove to the Irondale police department this morning and retrieved the hardware. The officer said that the SOO was located in one of the worst parts of the city where drug manufacturing is done mainly crack cocaine. That is probably what our trailer is being used for since it is a complete home on wheels.

The SOO power unit is badly damaged while the slug and caboose are moderately damaged. The control unit was in the trailer so I will have to design and build a new RF remote control system for the rebuilt engine.

I figure it will take about a year to restore the damaged equipment.

I would like to thank everyone who contributed passing information around the country. I would also like to thank the Irondale police who went out of their way to secure a backhoe and lift the heavy SOO engine into my truck. Other officers helped get the other cars loaded.
