Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway
"Presentation" Locomotive Bell
Numbers stamped twice on the yoke, 3117,
indicate this bell was mounted on a 2-8-2 "Mikado" locomotive
built by Baldwin for the Santa Fe in 1913 and scrapped between
1948 and 1954. The number 1842 is stamped on the lanyard arm.
The air actuator had been removed.
The Bell: The Santa Fe sent some of these
bells to their machine shop to be spun on a lathe to polish
them, and they would sweat solder a brass plaque on them with
the date. They were presented as gifts to Churches, Schools, and
distinguished individuals. This particular bell was discovered
in the basement of a church in San Bernardino California just
prior to demolition of said structure. Bell is about 17" in
diameter and there is a mold flaw on the back side of the bell
as shown. Bell has a really sweet sound.
